Droplet lift-off from hydrophobic surfaces from impact with soft-hydrogel spheres

چکیده

Abstract Droplet impacts on superhydrophobic surfaces may result in complete bouncing, with the absence of contact hysteresis and viscous dissipation leading droplet to fully rebound off surface. This usually happens retraction phase, when retracts back after reaching a maximum spread diameter. Here, we present experimental evidence bouncing phenomenon where sessile hydrophobic surface bounces its spreading phase soft deformable hydrogel sphere axisymmetrically droplet. We term this as ‘Lift-Off’ propose simple force balance based deformation characteristics explain out-of-plane jump during spreading. observe three different impact regimes, their dependency modified elastic ‘Mach’ number ( M * ) ≈ 0.1 corresponding onset lift-off. also report unique acoustic signatures lift-off cases, associated capture air-bubbles through air-borne retracting rim. These results have potential applications for drainage cleaning, non-stick coating, industrial mixing plant disease

Droplet evaporation on heated hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces.

The evaporation characteristics of sessile water droplets on smooth hydrophobic and structured superhydrophobic heated surfaces are experimentally investigated. Droplets placed on the hierarchical superhydrophobic surface subtend a very high contact angle (∼160°) and demonstrate low roll-off angle (∼1°), while the hydrophobic substrate supports corresponding values of 120° and ∼10°. The substra...

Hydrophobic Non-fouling Surfaces for Droplet Based Microfluidic Bioanalytical Systems

This paper presents the principle, fabricated structure, characterization and results obtained for a new class of surfaces—“hydrophobic non-fouling surfaces”—for droplet-based microfluidics. Building on the theory of wetting of rough surfaces, we have developed novel surfaces which are chemically hydrophilic, i.e., the droplet is in contact with a non-fouling hydrophilic material but exhibits h...

Droplet rebound from rigid or strongly hydrophobic sur- faces

– A weakly deformable droplet impinging on a rigid surface rebounds if the surface is intrinsically hydrophobic or if the gas film trapped underneath the droplet is able to keep the interfaces from touching. A simple, physically motivated model inspired by analysis of droplets colliding with deformable interfaces is proposed in order to investigate the dynamics of the rebound process and the ef...

Self-Propelled Droplet Removal from Hydrophobic Fiber-Based Coalescers.

Fiber-based coalescers are widely used to accumulate droplets from aerosols and emulsions, where the accumulated droplets are typically removed by gravity or shear. This Letter reports self-propelled removal of drops from a hydrophobic fiber, where the surface energy released upon drop coalescence overcomes the drop-fiber adhesion, producing spontaneous departure that would not occur on a flat ...

Lift-off Processes with Photoresists

Beside wet or dry etching, lift-off is a common technique to pattern metal or dielectrica films in the μm or sub-μm range. The main criteria for the choice of a photoresist best-suited for a certain lift-off process are: The thickness of the coated material The coating technology (evaporation, sputtering, CVD, ...) and the maximum temperature the resist film has to stand during coating The requ...
